The Impact of Bird Scaring Cannons: Balancing Crop Protection and Community Concerns

If you live near a field, you may hear dull noises, regular noises, similar to gunshots. Surely it is bird scaring cannons, in other words, gas cannons that allow farmers to scare birds away.

The problem is that this noise bothers local residents like Salia: “My son can’t sleep. He asks me what it is, why he always hears these booms“.

But for Pierre Debrichy, owner of the 14 Bonniers farm in Braine-le-Comte, using this technique is essential. He explains : “We are in organic farming so we don’t really have a choice. Birds are no longer afraid of scarecrows. So we use these gas cannons. But we use them as little as possible because I understand that the noise can be disturbing.”

Without the use of these cannons, this farmer’s crops are damaged: “The birds eat the seeds, if we don’t do that, they eat everything and we have nothing left“.
