The Impact of Inflation on Christmas Gift Resale: Insights From eBay’s Barometer

2023-12-25 11:43:40

It’s a striking sign like so many others. The financial crisis and the difficulties that many Belgian and French households are going through obviously slip under the tree, even following unwrapping the gifts.

“We have been studying the phenomenon of the resale of Christmas gifts for more than 10 years using our barometer”, explains Sarah Tayeb, General Director of eBay in France.

“The results of this new edition are particularly revealing of the impact of inflation on consumption habits. Indeed, the proportion of French people ready to resell their gifts is experiencing an unprecedented increase in 2023. And financial necessity prevails on pleasure: for the first time this year, the French will resell more to pay the bills than to treat themselves to a gift they like. However, it is important to remember that the resale of gifts not only helps replenish the wallet , but also to be an actor in a circular economy”, she adds.
