Urgent: France Faces Surge in Imported Chikungunya and Dengue Cases

France is currently experiencing an unprecedented surge in imported cases of Chikungunya and Dengue fever. Between January 1 and May 20, 950 cases of Chikungunya have been identified, prompting the Directorate General of Health (DGS) to issue an urgent alert to healthcare professionals. The outbreak has been particularly severe in mainland France, with over 1,275 cases reported since the start of the year.

Chikungunya and Dengue: A Rising Concern

The majority of Chikungunya cases are being imported from Réunion Island, while a Dengue epidemic is raging in the Antilles. A recent study published in “The Lancet” suggests that both diseases could become endemic in Europe in the coming years, raising serious public health concerns.

Early Identification and Prevention

The DGS emphasizes the importance of early identification of cases to reduce the risk of viral transmission within metropolitan France. Health professionals are advised to be vigilant for patients presenting with fever and pain, particularly if they have recently returned from affected regions. Symptomatic treatment, including analgesics and antipyretics, is recommended, with a caution against aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Compulsory Reporting and Mosquito Prevention

Reporting of Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika is mandatory. Additionally, the DGS advises healthcare professionals and the general public to take preventive measures against mosquito proliferation by eliminating stagnant water around homes and premises. This includes removing small containers like the underside of pots, waste, and gutters.
