The Initiative for Municipal Tax Transparency in Brussels: Citizens’ Inquiries to Hold Municipal Councils Accountable

2023-09-15 14:46:51

“The owners (of Brussels) will submit citizen inquiries to the municipal councils of each municipality which has increased the tax”, we can read in a press release relayed by our colleagues from Free. This decision was taken Thursday during a meeting organized at the headquarters of the National Union of Owners and Co-owners (SNPC). Thus, in each municipality concerned, boxes will be sent to collect signatures.

The municipalities targeted are Forest, Ganshoren, Anderlecht, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Saint-Gilles, Ixelles, Watermael-Boitsfort and Schaerbeek. The objective of these questions is to ask municipal elected officials to explain the reasons which push them to increase their withholding tax when other municipalities have kept their rate at a stable level.

This is the first time that this type of citizen inquiry has taken place.
