On Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi announced the arrest of a person working in a state institution who confessed to killing demonstrators, and indicated that he intends to call for a third round of national dialogue to solve Iraq’s problems.
Al-Kadhimi said in statements reported by the official Iraqi News Agency that the authorities arrested last week, “an important person who belongs to one of the state institutions, who confessed to killing protesters and some personalities.”
Al-Kazemi called on “state, legislative, judicial and security institutions to cooperate to end the escaped weapon,” noting that “everyone knows who owns the escaped weapon, and we have taken measures to address it.”
Al-Kazemi added that his government is trying to “calmly address the loosening of arms, without this being reflected on people’s lives and their reality.”
In another context, Al-Kazemi, who is currently in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly meetings, said, “I will call for a third round of national dialogue to solve our problems, and we have no way but dialogue,” stressing, “We have an opportunity to build Iraq, and everyone must bear responsibilities towards that.”
The Iraqi prime minister urged the political forces to “assume their historical responsibilities towards Iraq and take advantage of the opportunities for national dialogue.”
He pointed out that “the stability of the region has positive repercussions on the situation in Iraq,” stressing that “Iraq succeeded in converging views between Iran and Saudi Arabia and other countries that succeeded in restoring their relationship with each other following that.”
For months, Iraq has been living in a stifling political crisis that left the country without a new government, prime minister or president.
