Harvard researchers have completed an 85-year study of adult development, finding that the quality of relationships, especially marriages, is a key factor in a long and happy life.

The study began in 1938 with 724 participants and now includes 1,300 descendants. Every two years, participants’ health was monitored and they answered questions regarding their lives to determine factors influencing life expectancy.

The results showed that relationship satisfaction influenced health and predicted well-being by age 80. Loneliness has proven to be as dangerous to health as smoking or obesity. The quality of interpersonal connections regulates stress and its effect on the physiology of the body. Connecting with supportive people helps cope with stress and prevents chronic diseases, Express reports.

While the benefits of relationships vary across personality types, positive interactions with coworkers, friends, and even strangers also contribute to well-being.
