The Life and Legacy of Piper Laurie: A Tribute to an Iconic American Actress

American actress Piper Laurie, nominated three times for the Oscars and known in particular for her roles in Carrie et The Hustlerdied Saturday at age 91, in Los Angeles, her agent confirmed to several media outlets.

He confirmed that the actress had been ill for a while. However, the exact cause of the actress’ death has not been announced.

“A magnificent human and one of the greatest talents of our time,” said the artist’s agent, Mario Rosenberg.

Born Rosetta Jacobs in Detroit, Michigan, in 1932, the actress had her name changed to Piper Laurie in 1949.

She made her cinematic debut in the film Louisa, working notably with the future American president Ronald Reagan, with whom she even dated for a while.

After a few forgotten roles, Piper Laurie co-starred with Paul Newman in the 1961 film The Hustlerfor which she earned the first of three Academy Award nominations.

She then disappeared from Hollywood, to concentrate on her marriage and family.

The public found it in the film Carrie, where she played the role of the protagonist’s religious extremist mother. This performance earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

In 1986, she was nominated for the same Oscar for her role in the film Children of a Lesser God.

Piper Laurie was also part of the cast of David Lynch’s famous television series Twin Peaks. His role earned him a Golden Globe in 1991.
