The link between sleep and Alzheimer’s highlighted at the University of Liège

The discoveries made at GIGA, the interdisciplinary research institute in biomedical sciences of the University of Liège, might make it possible to detect very early individuals at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and thus include them in clinical projects with a view to better take care of them to prevent or delay the disease, ULiège announced on Tuesday.

While it has long been known that sleep is important for memory, more recently it has been shown that sleep may contribute to the evolution of changes in brain structure that lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Indeed, sleep contributes to the elimination of the residues of cerebral functioning, including the proteins that are considered to be the basis of Alzheimer’s disease.
