Kills the “hormone of joy”

Everyone knows that smoking is harmful to the lungs. But it turns out that the addiction also negatively affects the human psyche, reports Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica.

Scientists from Denmark have discovered a connection between smoking and the development of depression and bipolar disorder. According to the results of the experiment, which covered 350 thousand people, these mental disorders were found in smoking participants, while pathologies were much less common in the non-smoking group.

Researchers explain that nicotine negatively affects the production of serotonin (the “happy hormone”). This is why smokers are characterized by depression and the emotional swings that accompany bipolar disorder.

Also, a number of repeated genes were found in those with nicotine addiction. This makes us think that the predisposition to smoking may be hereditary, experts say.
