“Our correspondent Corrado Zunino and his colleague Bogdan Bitik became victims of a Russian sniper attack today in the suburbs of Kherson,” Repubblica announced.

“Unfortunately, Bitik did not survive and died, leaving behind his wife and son. Corrado, who was wounded in the shoulder, is in a hospital in Kherson,” the newspaper reported.

Both journalists were wearing bulletproof vests with the inscription “press”.

“We were hit. I saw Bogdan on the ground, he didn’t move. I crawled until I got out of the line of fire. I ran to a civilian car. I was covered in blood, I was taken to a hospital in Kherson,” said Zunino in a telephone interview with his colleague Repubblica.

“I tried to call Bogdan several times, he didn’t answer. He was my great friend,” the journalist added.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that the ministry and the Italian embassy in Kyiv are working with the Ukrainian authorities on Zunino’s return to Italy.
