Slovakia celebrated its thirtieth birthday at the beginning of this year, but there is not much left of the optimism of the early 1990s in the country today. Parliamentary elections are due at the end of September, which might be decisive for the future of the country. Robert Fico is currently number one in the opinion polls, not an unknown quantity. He has already served as Prime Minister of Slovakia for three terms, and in his last term he had to resign following the young investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée were murdered in 2018. It was the hour of hope in Slovakia when, following the elections in March 2020, the new government under Prime Minister Igor Matovič promised to fight corruption. But instead, three years of chaos, rapid changes and new appointments followed in the government until, following several government reshuffles, early new elections were decided for September 30, 2023.
