Breaking News: Controversial Judicial Appointments in Buenos Aires Stir Political Debate
In a move that has sparked immediate controversy, the Buenos Aires Senate has approved more than fifty judicial appointments, including several with notable political ties. Among the approved judges is Carlos Ariel Díaz, a lawyer with a history of fervent Peronist militancy and multiple connections to municipalities controlled by the Justicialist Party (PJ).
Carlos Ariel Díaz: A Peronist Judge in the Making
Díaz, 57, has been chosen to become a judge in the Labor jurisdiction of Morón, his hometown. With an extensive background in political activism and connections to prominent Peronist figures like Leonardo Nardini and Walter Festa, Díaz’s appointment has raised eyebrows among those concerned about judicial independence.
His social media accounts reveal a decade-long history of Peronist militancy, including support for Daniel Scioli in 2015, Alberto Fernández in 2019, and Sergio Massa in 2023. Díaz has also been vocal in his support for various social policies during the pandemic and has been actively involved in the internal politics of Peronism.
Díaz’s performance in the Magistracy Council exams was average, scoring 65 out of 100 in the written exam and 95 out of 100 in the interview, placing him in the tenth position of the order of merit. Despite this, his political connections appear to have played a significant role in his appointment.
Diego Olivera Zapiola: A Judge with a Controversial Past
Another controversial appointment is that of Diego Olivera Zapiola, a judge from Dolores who has been accused of having a “guarantee” profile, delaying the process of lawlessness for political figures. Olivera Zapiola gained notoriety last year for delaying the request for lawlessness of Senator Flavia Delmonte, involved in an alleged corruption framework.
Despite these accusations, Olivera Zapiola’s appointment to the Appeal Chamber and Criminal Guarantees of Dolores was approved by the Senate. His past performance has been criticized, with neighborhood protests and media reports highlighting his alleged bias.
Judicial Independence Under Scrutiny
These appointments come at a time when judicial independence is under scrutiny in Argentina. Critics argue that the political ties of these judges could compromise the impartiality of the judiciary, while supporters maintain that their appointments are justified by their political credentials.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how these appointments will impact the judicial landscape in Buenos Aires and the broader political context of Argentina.
The Nation attempted to contact Carlos Ariel Díaz for comment but has not received a response as of yet.
