Niger has become a diplomatic debacle for the West. Both the French and US governments acknowledged this week the failure of their efforts to reverse the military coup in the West African nation. French forces began withdrawing soldiers from their former bastion in the Sahel on Tuesday, while there was official talk of a coup in Washington for the first time since the military coup nearly three months ago. Because this designation has far-reaching consequences for US relations with Niger, Washington has so far shied away from it – also in the hope that the junta might eventually be persuaded to resign.
