At the rate things are going, the Quebec government will not be able to achieve its objective of 2,000 specialized nurse practitioners (SNPs) in the health network in 2025.

A total of 111 new IPS will join the ranks of the profession in 2024 in Quebec, which will bring their number to 1,425, the Order of Nurses of Quebec said in a press release on Wednesday. However, the Quebec Ministry of Health had set itself the objective of having 2000 in 2025.

With more advanced training than ordinary nurses, NPs can diagnose illnesses, determine what treatments to give to patients and monitor pregnancies, among other things. They are highly sought following in the health network, and dozens of job offers for them are currently posted.

In December 2022, seven new IPS clinics opened their doors in the network. However, as reported The duty On Wednesday, only 15,000 patients might be treated this year in these clinics. Quebec plans to open 16 clinics of this type by 2028.

NPs specialize in five areas: primary care, adult care, mental health, pediatric care and neonatology.
