Breaking News: Austrian Parliament’s Key Events and Decisions

Vienna, July 15, 2025 – The Austrian Parliament is gearing up for significant changes and crucial meetings as the current conference period draws to a close. The National Council will adjourn its session next Tuesday, while the Federal Council will review its latest decisions on Thursday. Additionally, the new president of the Peter Velvet Country Chamber will deliver his inaugural speech, and the Federal Council’s EU Committee will hold a meeting.

Conference-Free Period and Special Meetings

During the upcoming conference-free period, the National Council can be reconvened for special meetings or extraordinary conferences if a request is sufficiently supported. The new conference period begins on September 9th. The Parliament’s web portal offers detailed information on opening times, guided tours, and further offers during this period.

Due to repair and maintenance work, the Parliament building will be inaccessible to the public from July 21 to 27, 2025, and from August 25 to 31. Media representatives are advised to register in advance for film and photo recordings.

Tuesday, July 15, 2025 – Federal Council President Peter Velvet will oversee the change of chair in the country chamber for the Styria evening in the Parliament. The event will commence with the Styrian flag accompanied by music bands on the forecourt of the Parliament building, followed by greetings from Federal Council President Peter Velvet and Styrian Landtag President Gerald Deutschmann.

Wednesday, July 16, 2025 – In the EU Committee of the Bundesrat, Ambassador Christian Grønbech-Jensen will present the priorities of the Danish EU Council chair. The session will also discuss a European Commission proposal for adjustments in the GAP legal regulations.

Thursday, July 17, 2025 – National Council President Walter Rosenkranz will attend the conference of the Presidents of the parliaments of the German-speaking countries in Switzerland. At 9 a.m., Federal Council President Peter Velvet will deliver his inaugural speech, followed by a current hour with Minister of Education Christoph Return. Key decisions by the National Council include messenger monitoring, the introduction of the partial board, and the ban on marriage for under 18-year-olds.

Future Engagements

Tuesday, July 22, 2025 – A delegation of the special committee on the living space crisis in the EU of the European Parliament will meet with members of the Committee on Construction and Living at Palais Epstein.

Tuesday, July 29, 2025 – Federal Council President Peter Samt and the second President of the National Council, Peter Haubner, will participate in the 6th IPU World Conference in Switzerland. The conference focuses on “a world in turmoil: parliamentary cooperation and multilateralism for peace, justice, and prosperity for everyone.”

Tuesday, August 26, 2025 – The Interparliamentary GASP/GSVP conference will take place in Copenhagen with Austrian participation. Topics will include the future of European foreign and security policy, Ukraine, NATO, EU expansion, and critical infrastructure.
