Taekkyon Takes Root: Ancient Korean Martial Art Becomes First-of-Its-Kind University Course in the Philippines

Manila, Philippines – In a landmark cultural exchange, Taekkyon, a captivating Korean martial art recognized by UNESCO, has officially been integrated into the regular curriculum at Ateneo de Manila University, a leading private institution in the Philippines. This marks the first time globally that Taekkyon is offered as a formal academic subject, signaling a significant step in preserving and promoting this ancient tradition. This is urgent breaking news for martial arts enthusiasts and those following cultural preservation efforts.

From Korean Roots to Philippine Campus: A Unique Partnership

Park Jong-bo, representing the Korea Taek Dog Association, began teaching Taekkyon to students at Ateneo de Manila on the 6th of this month. Currently, 59 students are enrolled in the course, which meets twice weekly for three-hour sessions. The program isn’t just about physical technique; it’s a holistic experience blending theory and practical skills, aiming to immerse students in Korean martial arts and culture. Yoo Jong-soo, also from the Korea Taek Dog Association, assists Park in delivering the practical training.

What is Taekkyon? A Dance of Power and Tradition

Taekkyon isn’t your typical martial art. Described as a “flexible and rhythmic dance” that incorporates both striking and leg techniques, it’s a visually stunning and historically rich practice. Designated as National Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 76 in 1983, Taekkyon achieved further recognition in 2011 when UNESCO inscribed it as the first traditional martial art on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This prestigious designation underscores its cultural significance and the importance of its preservation.

The Vision Behind the Curriculum: Fostering Local Leadership

The initiative was spearheaded by Professor Ryan Cruise G-LALOG of Ateneo de Manila University, who first encountered Taekkyon at the Chungju World Martial Arts Festival in 2004 and has been practicing it ever since. He established a Taekkyon club at the university in 2023, paving the way for its inclusion as a formal course. According to Park Jong-bo, the ultimate goal extends beyond simply teaching the art. “It is the final goal of fostering local leaders in the Philippines and making them publicly known to their country,” he stated. To achieve this, the Korea Taek Dog Association has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Cali Arnis Association, a Filipino traditional martial arts organization, and is actively conducting training programs for local instructors.

A Global First with Lasting Impact

Park emphasizes the uniqueness of this program: “It is the only university in the world under the official subject of ‘TAEKKYEON.’” Initial reactions from students have been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing fascination with the art’s unique movements and sounds, and a deep appreciation for its UNESCO-recognized heritage. Professor G-LALOG’s dedication and the collaborative spirit between the Korean and Filipino organizations have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

This groundbreaking initiative not only introduces a captivating martial art to a new generation of students but also strengthens cultural ties between Korea and the Philippines. As Taekkyon continues to flourish at Ateneo de Manila University, it promises to inspire a new wave of martial arts practitioners and cultural ambassadors, ensuring the legacy of this ancient tradition endures for years to come.
