The price of electricity in Belgium at its lowest level since May

The wholesale price for electricity has reached its lowest level since the end of May in Belgium, according to data from the Epex Spot electricity exchange released on Tuesday.

The average price known as “day-ahead” for delivery on Wednesday amounts to 51.05 euros per megawatt hour, the lowest amount since 39.61 euros on May 27. This decrease can be explained in particular by the production of wind energy and the closure of many businesses during the Christmas holidays. Temperatures also remain relatively mild. At the end of August, the price of electricity reached an unprecedented peak of 700.41 euros per megawatt hour due to the sharp rise in natural gas prices caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the shutdown of several nuclear power plants French, the lack of wind energy and the heat wave.
