The price of medicine may drop by a step.. facts that citizens should know

A source in the pharmaceutical sector commented on some of the suggestions issued by the Parliamentary Health Committee during its last session, and said that pharmaceutical companies have achieved fantastic profits in the past years, suggesting that the price of medicine be reduced by 40%, divided between 20% borne by the Banque du Liban through insurance. Foreign currencies are based on the exchange rate, and 10% is borne by companies exporting medicine abroad, in addition to 10% borne by importing companies in Lebanon.

The source strongly criticized this proposition, describing it as theoretical. He also indicated that The companies importing medicines sell according to the pricing of the Ministry of Health, and they work under the umbrella of subsidies, and they have been exposed to huge financial losses due to delays and non-payment, and because of the random lifting of subsidies.

The source asked: “Who confirms that the Banque du Liban accepts to subsidize medicines at the exchange platform price at 20% less than the parallel market price, when it refused to provide support previously? And who said that companies exporting abroad accept to bear the 10%? And how? The importer bears the 10%, while his royalty ranges between 7.5% and 10%?

The source pointed out that “in this case, the overwhelming majority of importers will be unable to import,” noting that “in the absence of curbing the collapse of the Lebanese pound exchange rate, there is absolutely no benefit in reducing prices.”

He added, “Can a citizen who was unable to buy medicine at a price of 600 thousand L.L., buy it now at a price of 400,000 L.L?”

He considered that this is the main reason for the high prices of medicines and not the price of medicines in itself, and the evidence for this is that they were available to all citizens before the crisis, calling on officials to control the exchange rate of the lira instead of putting measures to end the pharmaceutical sector.

The source explained that the companies carried out their responsibilities to the fullest extent, as they imported a large number of medicines in the recent period, and incurred a lot such as late payments; Differences and discounts of up to 20% have been levied on over-the-counter medicines; It also incurred the illogical deduction on the bills in the Central Bank for these drugs.

He added, “Despite all of the above, these companies are still continuing their work and supplying the Lebanese market with medicines, wondering whether the aim of these proposals is to collapse the sector completely.

He mentioned that Lebanon has recently witnessed a number of international companies reducing their work or closing their offices in Lebanon, considering that any additional step in this field will lead to a complete collapse and the departure of the rest of these companies.

He concluded by saying that “the actual solution is to support people who do not have the purchasing power of chronic diseases medicines for a symbolic price through primary care centers,” and concluded: “All statistics indicate that the donations that reach Lebanon monthly from friendly countries and international organizations are sufficient to cover the needs of the Lebanese from These drugs are many. If they are distributed in a fair way, and if they stop trading or distributing them according to favoritism, this will solve a large part of the problem and secure the drugs with actual monitoring of the distribution process. So what prevents taking such a step, instead of creating additional problems, not only for chronic diseases But for all medicines?
