“The Role of the Red Army in WWII: Slovak President’s Perspective”

2023-05-09 07:28:52

Slovak President Zuzana Chaputova noted the role of the Red Army in the liberation of her country during the Second World War. However, she drew attention to the participation in the anti-Hitler coalition and other states. According to the president, the experience of those years shows that the source of conflicts is not nations, but “regimes that violate freedoms and human rights … be it fascist, communist or various authoritarian regimes of the 21st century.”

“Our territory and the territory of Eastern Europe was mainly liberated by the Soviet Red Army with the help of domestic resistance, the first Czechoslovak army corps and the Romanian army. However, the anti-Hitler coalition also included other great powers – Great Britain, the USA, France, China. By the end of the war, more than 50 states of the world were involved in it,” Ms. Chaputova wrote on Facebook (the social network belongs to Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

In the largest cities of Slovakia the day before, on May 8, ceremonies were held to honor the memory of Czechoslovak citizens who fell in the war, Red Army soldiers and soldiers of Western countries. In the battles with the Nazis in 1944-1945, more than 63.5 thousand Red Army soldiers died.
