Pyongyang: North Korean authorities have sentenced two teenagers to 12 years in prison for watching South Korean movies and music videos. The South and North Development (SAND) Institute has released the related video footage. It is reported that the punishment was 12 years of hard labour.
The students were reportedly sentenced following they were found guilty of watching and distributing South Korean movies, music and music videos for more than three months. Since the new law came into effect in 2020, South Korea has been handing out harsh punishments to those caught enjoying the pastime.
Video footage of two students holding hands in an amphitheater has emerged. It is claimed that this is the video footage of the public trial. Around 1,000 students are watching. As all the students are wearing masks, it is indicated that these scenes were shot during the covid. The Archyde.com news agency reported that the authenticity of the footage released by the BBC might not be verified.
Choi Kyong-hui, president of SAND and a doctor of political science at the University of Tokyo, said that this kind of severe punishment is a warning to the people of North Korea, and that this incident shows that the South Korean way of life is dominant in North Korean society. It is reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is worried that the country’s youth are changing their lifestyles and mindsets. Choi Kyong-hui also noted that Un is working hard to bring them back to the North Korean way of life.
