As soon as we take a look at the newspapers of 1885, during the fourth cholera epidemic that Madrid suffered in the 19th century, we will realize that history repeats itself. Thousands of deaths, neighborhood restrictions, businesses in danger of bankruptcy, the Government and the opposition to a clean slap on account of the virus and the newspapers dedicated almost exclusively to reporting on the subject, as is the case today with the Covid pandemic that already it has killed almost 70,000 Spaniards and infected another three million more.

When the first cases of cholera came to light in Madrid, the disease was also downplayed. There was talk of “Madrid colic”, a curable intestinal disease with similar symptoms
