Clothes were of great importance to the Romans. Today, men cannot imagine their life without trousers – they are an integral part of their wardrobe. But in Ancient Rome, any person who put on pants risked running into huge problems.
Even the military did not wear trousers – and this happened for a reason. You might think that it’s a matter of banal convenience. But in reality everything was completely different.
According to the emperor’s law, wearing pants was severely punished – they might even be expelled from the city. The reason is that these clothes were considered barbaric. Meanwhile, the Romans considered themselves to be civilized peoples who were alien to aggression and belligerence. That is why even the male half of the population preferred togas, tunics and long shirts.
