The State of VoD: European and American Films Dominating the Streaming Platforms in 2022

The use of VoD on streaming platforms like Netflix and others remained almost unchanged between 2022 and 2021. The pandemic had represented a prosperous period for watching films at home: growth rates had been greater than 50% in 2019 and 2020, then 19% in 2021.

American films increased between 2019 and 2020 by 16%, then their number has stabilized around 15,000 films since. However, on the demand side, American productions remain predominant, with a share of usage of up to 79% depending on the type of VoD.

Swiss films represented less than 3% of the offer. They generated up to 1% of uses.

Animated films ahead of documentaries

While animated films represented only 4% of the entire VoD offering last year, they generated 14% of film purchases, 12% of rentals and 11% of viewings via streaming services. subscription and streaming. We observe an opposite trend for documentaries: they represented between 8% and 10% of the VoD offer but generated only between 1% and 4% of uses.
