Reading of the holy gospel according to Saint John

Jn 12, 1-11

Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom he had raised from the dead. There they offered him a dinner; Martha served and Lazarus was one of those who were with him at the table. Mary then took a pound of real, very expensive nard perfume, she anointed Jesus’ feet with it and wiped them with her hair, and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples, the one who was going to betray Jesus, exclaimed: “Why hasn’t that perfume been sold for three hundred denarii to give to the poor?” He said this, not because he cared regarding the poor, but because he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the bag, he stole what was put in it.

Then Jesus said: “Leave her alone. I had saved this for the day of my burial; because you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.”

Meanwhile, the crowd of Jews, who heard that Jesus was there, came, not only for Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, whom the Lord had raised from the dead. The high priests deliberated to kill Lazarus, because because of him, many Jews separated and believed in Jesus.
