The Surprising Origins of the Iconic Hero in Russian Fairy Tales

The origin did not prevent him from becoming the hero of Russian fairy tales.

The blond handsome Ivan from the Soviet film “Morozko” seems to be the ideal hero of a Slavic fairy tale. Blue eyes, lush blond hair, a strong physique – this is how we imagine Ivanushka, who appears in almost every Russian folk tale. But the actor who played Ivan, as it turned out, had far from Slavic roots.

Eduard Konstantinovich Izotov was born in the Byelorussian SSR in 1936. His parents lived in the Vitebsk region, in the village of Surazh. Although the Izotov family bore a completely Russian surname, by nationality they were not Russians and not even Belarusians, but Jews. A handsome and talented young man easily entered VGIK, and following that he got the role of a hero from Russian folk tales.

Unfortunately, following the role in Morozko, the career of a handsome actor went into decline. He was offered only supporting roles, or even episodic ones. In the 80s, the actor unsuccessfully sold the cottage, taking payment for real estate in dollars. In the USSR, transactions in foreign currency were prohibited. For this, he received 2.5 years in prison, and ended his life in a mental hospital. The actor was never able to recover from all the trials and died in the hospital in 2003.
