Tectonics of Chile: Chile is located mostly on the South American plate, which to the west is in contact with the Nazca plate, up to the Taitao peninsula, and with the Antarctic plate from the latter point to the western mouth of the Strait of Magellan. These plates converge at a speed of approximately 66 mm/year and 18 mm/year, respectively.
