The town of Enerhodar, with a population of only 50,000, is home to the largest nuclear power plant in Europe with a capacity of 5700 MW. It has been occupied by Russian troops since March. Although the six reactors have been shut down, there are fears that a serious incident might occur on the site mined by the Russian army. It came under fire several times and the emergency power line was cut.

Diesel units had to step in to maintain cooling. Both warring parties repeatedly accuse each other of wanting to provoke an incident at the nuclear power plant. In July it was said that Russia wanted to blow it up, like the dam near Cherson before it. The consequences would be dramatic:
