The child’s mother, Yoana M., 34, was arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter, battery and concealment of the body, among other charges. In her first statements, made before the discovery of Raul’s body, the mother claimed that she had nothing to do with his death. She blamed her ex-partner, but her daughter later said her mother and her partner were present when the body was thrown into the water.

“Don’t send me back to Belgium, my mother will kill me”: Raul, the 9-year-old boy killed in Ghent, was afraid of his mother

The ex-companion, Nicu C., 34, was arrested on April 14 in Bakel, the Netherlands. He is suspected of the same facts as the mother and was handed over to Belgium on April 25. During a confrontation, the mother and ex-boyfriend both said Raul’s minor sister also allegedly beat the child. The investigation was then extended to the girl, who was interviewed once more. She has since been placed in a juvenile institution by the youth judge.

The autopsy of the boy’s body, which remained in the water for a long time, did not shed light on the circumstances of the death. The body has now been handed over to Raul’s relatives. The latter indicated that the child will be buried in Romania, reports Het Nieuwsblad.
