In the Asterix volume “Asterix and Cleopatra” from 1965, it is the heavyweight Obelix who robs the Great Sphinx of Giza of her nose when he climbs on her head. The olfactory organ might not support his weight and eventually broke off. In fact, the monumental depiction of a lion with a human head probably only lost its nose in the High Middle Ages. This also contradicts the modern myth that the nose was the victim of cannon fire by Napoleon’s troops during his Egyptian campaign in 1798.
