The Swiss Armed Forces prohibited their troops from using the instant messaging applications Telegram, WhatsApp and Signal, according to the portal Swissinfo this January 6. The decision was made in view of “the need to guarantee information security,” a military spokesman explained to local media.

Instead of these platforms, the ‘software’ produced by the local Threema company will be used, which is not subject to the legislation of any other country. Thus, Daniel Reist, spokesman for the Armed Forces, detailed to the agency AFP that at the end of December the commanders and chiefs of the General Staff received an e-mail recommending that they go to Threema. The suggestion applies to everyone, including recruits and those returning to the Army to participate in retraining courses.

Threema is an ad-free instant messaging service that claims to have 10 million users. The developers promise that the application generates the least amount of user data possible.
