Authorities in Mexico said they were analyzing the case of a 32-year-old doctor who was hospitalized after presenting a clinical reaction shortly after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine from the pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech.
The doctor, whose identity was not specified, was admitted to the intensive care unit of a public hospital in the northern state of Nuevo León, after she developed a skin rash, seizures and difficulty breathing.
The initial diagnosis is encephalomyelitis under study, “the Ministry of Health reported in a statement released Friday night.
The secretariat added that the doctor has an allergic history and said that so far there is no evidence from clinical trials of the vaccine that any person has previously had encephalitis after its application.
Pfizer and BioNTech could not immediately obtain comment on the matter.
Last week, Mexico began vaccinating its population against COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus, which has so far left more than 126,500 deaths in the country.
The state plan calls for first inoculating about 750,000 health personnel who care for patients infected with the virus and, later, older adults.
