According to the organizer, the 30-year-old from Lower Austria canceled Saturday’s duel with local hero Casper Ruud because of food poisoning. A place in the semi-finals would no longer have been possible for “Thieminho”, the stage name used by UTS, following two defeats the day before.

“Unfortunately I’m suffering from food poisoning today. Despite all my efforts, I can’t get on the court,” Thiem said on the exhibition tournament’s website. He would have enjoyed the atmosphere in Oslo and the excitement of the UTS format. “I’m really sorry for the fans,” emphasized the 2020 US Open winner. Thiem was defeated by the Dane Holger Rune 2:3 and the Kazakh Alexander Bublik 1:3 in the competition held according to special rules on Friday .

The third group game once morest Ruud was played by Norwegian substitute Nicolai Budkov Kjaer instead of Thiem on Saturday. Rune also withdrew from the tournament early due to health problems, so Bublik made it into the Final Four alongside Ruud without a fight. Bublik will now face the Russian Andrej Rublew in the semi-finals on Sunday, while Ruud will face the Australian Alex de Minaur.
