German Judo Prodigies Glauner & Glaser Set to Compete at World Championships – A Breaking Sports Update

Sofia, Bulgaria – Two young athletes from Germany, Hannah Glauner (16) and Julius Glaser (17), are preparing to represent their nation at the U-18 Judo World Championships this week. What sets these teenagers apart isn’t just their dedication to a demanding sport, but a remarkable talent that has quickly propelled them to the international stage. This is a breaking sports story that highlights the future of Judo and the dedication of young athletes.

From Local Clubs to the World Stage: A Rising Judo Force

Glauner and Glaser, both hailing from the JC Wermelskirchen and now competing for Sport-Union Annen, have rapidly ascended through the ranks. Their journey began like many young athletes – a hobby explored after school. But their passion for Judo quickly revealed an exceptional aptitude. “Both certainly have the opportunity to achieve a good placement in Sofia,” states Jens Malewany, NRW state coach and former Bundesliga fighter. The pair joined SU Annen just over a year ago, strategically positioned for development within the first division team.

Glauner's Ground Game & Glaser's Explosiveness: A Winning Combination

What makes this duo so formidable? According to Glaser, Glauner is a “bank” on the ground, particularly in prolonged fights, known for her consistency and unwavering performance. Glauner, in turn, praises Glaser’s incredible speed and explosiveness, noting his effective footwork. This complementary skillset makes them a dynamic force in competition. Their training regimen includes twice-weekly sessions at the federal base in Cologne for Glauner, further honing her skills.

A Season of Success: Building Momentum for Sofia

2025 has already been a banner year for both athletes. Glauner, competing in the 52-kilo class, has reached the final at every international tournament, securing a European Cup victory in Berlin and a silver medal at the EYOF in Skopje. Glaser has also demonstrated impressive results, earning two bronze medals at European Cups and finishing seventh at the EYOF in the up to 60 kg weight class. Malewany emphasizes that the World Championships are a “bonus competition,” aiming to avoid adding undue pressure while still encouraging peak performance.

The Evergreen Appeal of Judo: Beyond Competition

Judo, meaning “gentle way,” is more than just a competitive sport. Rooted in Japanese martial arts, it emphasizes discipline, respect, and physical and mental strength. Its principles extend far beyond the dojo, fostering qualities like self-confidence, perseverance, and a strong moral compass. The sport’s global appeal continues to grow, with increasing participation rates worldwide. For aspiring judokas, starting young and finding a qualified instructor are crucial steps. Understanding the core principles of Judo – *seiryoku zenyo* (maximum efficiency, minimum effort) and *jita kyoei* (mutual welfare and benefit) – can provide valuable life lessons.

Looking Ahead: The Future of German Judo

With Konstantin Distel also representing the NWJV state association at the World Championships, Germany is showcasing a strong contingent of young Judo talent. The success of Glauner and Glaser isn’t just about individual achievement; it’s a testament to the robust training programs and dedicated coaching staff within German Judo. As they step onto the mat in Sofia, these athletes carry the hopes of a nation and the promise of a bright future for the sport.
