When the ice hockey striker Sascha Benes stormed towards the goal in the Bundesliga game between KSV and KAC in the Kapfenberg ice rink on December 27, 1997, he overlooked Klagenfurt Christian Sintschnig coming off the bench. There was a violent collision. “I saw everything. Knew what I had the second it happened.” The then 24-year-old Viennese was suddenly paralyzed from the neck down.
