Thorsten Fink, currently managing Samsunspor in Turkey, has publicly addressed his decision to decline an offer from Anderlecht and offered insight into his departure from KRC Genk. The German coach revealed that even as he held discussions with the Belgian club, he ultimately felt it wasn’t the right time to join due to instability within the organization and a lack of a clear strategic plan.
Fink’s comments come after speculation surrounding his potential return to Belgian football. He emphasized that his refusal wasn’t related to timing his arrival for a future season, as some reports suggested. “It’s not true,” Fink stated to Het Belang van Limburg. “I had a good discussion with Anderlecht, but I didn’t spot how I could implement my ideas there. The club was going through a turbulent period and there was no concrete plan.”
The instability at Anderlecht proved to be a decisive factor in his decision. Fink pointed to the subsequent dismissal of the club’s technical director shortly after his conversation with Anderlecht officials as evidence of the lack of a stable foundation. “Not long after our conversation, the technical director was also fired. That’s not a stable basis for building something, no matter the size of the club,” he explained.
Turning to his exit from KRC Genk in December 2025, Fink expressed understanding, while acknowledging the disappointment. He maintains that the issues at Genk weren’t a matter of personnel, but rather a systemic challenge related to player turnover. “Being fired is never pleasant, especially because I felt things were still going to work out. But I will always hold Genk in my heart, from the players to the board to the supporters,” Fink said. He noted that consistently replacing key players, particularly while competing on multiple fronts, presented a significant hurdle.
Fink believes that a club like Genk inevitably faces the need to sell its top performers. “Replacing them isn’t always easy, especially when you’re playing on three fronts,” he added. He currently manages Samsunspor, where he has overseen the team’s progression to the Conference League round of 16 and currently holds an eighth-place position in the Süper Lig VoetbalPrimeur.be.
The situation at Anderlecht, at the time of the discussions, was marked by change. Besnik Hasi had recently departed as head coach in February 2026, leaving the club searching for stability. VoetbalBelgie reports that Jérémy Taravel is currently finishing the season as Anderlecht’s head coach.
Fink’s experience highlights the importance of a clear vision and stable leadership in football management. His decision to prioritize a secure environment for implementing his footballing philosophy ultimately led him to Samsunspor, where he appears to be building a project with a more solid foundation.
As Fink continues his tenure with Samsunspor, the focus will be on solidifying their position in the Süper Lig and making a deeper run in the Conference League. The coming months will reveal whether his assessment of the situation at Anderlecht was accurate and if the club can discover the stability needed to return to the top of Belgian football.
