The growth rate of the new coronavirus pandemic has accelerated sharply in recent weeks and is already close to one million cases, after adding more than 100,000 per day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. However, it took 67 days to reach the first 100,000 positives.
U.S, which for the past week has been the country most affected by the number of cases, added more than25,000 cases in the last 24 hours and exceeds 216,000, practically double the number of infections confirmed by Italy and Spain. In the North American country more than 5,100 people have died.
The daily increases in the case of the United States are well above the highest number of infections recorded by China in the worst phase of the pandemic, when February 13 set the record with more than 15,000 positives in one day.
In fact,China has been overtaken in cases, in addition to the United States, Italy and Spain. In the Italian case, some 110,000 infections have already been confirmed and the balance of victims accumulates more than 13,100 names, more than in any other country in the world.
Spain is the third country most affected by the pandemic, with more than 104,000 cases, and the second country with the most deaths, with more than 9,300 fatalities due to COVID-19. The number of people cured in Spain exceeds that of Italy and is now around 22,000, waiting for the Ministry of Health to update the balance this Thursday.
China contains the virus
China, in an apparent phase of containment and with hardly any local cases, is the fourth country most affected by the number of cases. The Asian giant, which for months was the country with the most cases and fatalities, currently accounts for just over 82,000 infected people and some 3,300 deaths.
Germany is the fifth most affected country, with almost 78,000 cases and 931 deaths, while France ranks as the sixth country in number of cases, with about 58,000. The death toll in the case of France has already exceeded 4,000.
Iran follows next, with more than 47,000 cases and more than 3,000 deaths, followed by the United Kingdom, where the virus has reached maximum levels this week to accumulate almost 30,000 positives and more than 2,300 deaths.
Switzerland is in ninth position, with some 17,700 infected and 488 deaths, while Turkey has overtaken Belgium and already accumulates more than 15,600 cases, including at least 277 fatalities. Belgium and the Netherlands have so far confirmed 13,900 and 13,600 infections, although in the Dutch case the deceased have already exceeded 1,000 (1,175), compared to 828 registered in Belgian territory.
South Korea,which for weeks was the second country most affected by the coronavirus after Chinadown to fourteenth position– almost 10,000 positives and 169 deaths – after Austria has exceeded its data – more than 10,700 cases and 148 deaths.
Canada, for its part, is close to 10,000 cases and has already exceeded one hundred deaths (112), while Portugal has confirmed at least 187 deaths and more than 8,200 infections. Brazil, Israel and Australia are also above 5,000 cases, while Sweden and Norway have overcome the 4,000 barrier.
The Czech Republic, Ireland, Denmark and Chile have registered more than 3,000 positives, while Malaysia, Russia, Ecuador, Poland, Romania, Japan, Luxembourg, the Philippines and Pakistan have exceeded 2,000, a barrier that also borders on India. Over a thousand cases are Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Finland, Greece, South Africa, Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Iceland, Argentina, Colombia, Serbia and Singapore.
