Thousands of people stuck on cruise ship for fear of cholera

After a series of gastrointestinal cases on board the Norwegian Dawn, local authorities refused to allow the ship to dock in the port of the capital Port Louis.

The French island of La Réunion had previously refused the ship. Southern Africa is currently experiencing one of the worst cholera outbreaks in years.

The majority of the 2,184 passengers would start their journey home on Sunday. At the same time, 2,279 new travelers were originally scheduled to board the ship in Port Louis, the port authority said.

Diarrhea and vomiting

There are also 1,026 crew members on the ship. According to daily newspaper BN DeStem, there are at least 15 Dutch people among the passengers, including a family from Breda.

Employees of the Ministry of Health took samples from regarding fifteen people on board. The results of the study are expected on Tuesday. According to authorities, at least fourteen passengers and one crew member suffered from diarrhea and vomiting. They are isolated in their rooms.

The Norwegian Dawn departed South Africa on February 13 for a voyage via Madagascar to the islands of Réunion and Mauritius. The cruise ship would then return to South Africa with new passengers.
