TIROLER TAGESZEITUNG AM SONNTAG “Editorial” edition of Sunday, February 19, 2023, by Marco Witting: “Stagnation as a permanent state”

Solutions are finally needed so that the environment and residents are no longer overrun by traffic in winter.

Innsbruck (OTS) There’s very little you can count on in life. But you can count on the fact that there will be a backlog on the main connections in Tyrol on weekends in winter. Standing still is a tradition. He went into everyday life. For years. For decades. The locals, those who live along these routes in the Zillertal, in the Ausserfern or in the Unterland, have long given up. Driving from Reutte to Innsbruck on Saturday? Not even if I have to. And many residents feel abandoned. They plan their lives around traffic jams. Improvement? Not in sight.
This country needs tourism. That should be clear to everyone. But as the now strange-sounding word tourism suggests, traffic also comes into the country. A lot of traffic. And politicians and tourism experts have not yet managed to do anything to ensure that it does not overrun the environment, the roads and, above all, the people. A mere 90 minutes of lost time in the Ausserfern alone from the Fernpass to the border tunnel yesterday is an impressive sign that absolutely nothing has changed in terms of travel behavior. Although people have been philosophizing regarding it for 20 years. Saturday remains the day for the “change”. Arriving by train remains the exception.
Other ideas? They are still limited to the fact that new roads are required. Any traffic planner will confirm that they only shift the problem to the next location or ultimately attract even more traffic. The debate on how traffic in Tyrol will be conceived in the future must have been moving for a long time. We’ve had enough downtime!
