After Guinea’s independence on October 2, 1958, the country was led by Sekou Touré until his death in 1984. After independence, the country became the People’s Revolutionary Republic of Guinea.

The regime opts for socialism and all political parties that existed before independence are banned. Socialist power establishes the single party.

In 1965, Sekou Touré broke the relations renewed a few years earlier with France. Power hardens and radicalizes year following year, imaginary plots are announced to allow power to purge any dissenting voice.

On March 26, 1984, Sekou Touré died in Cleveland in the United States. and a military junta seizes power, the Military Committee for National Recovery (CMRN).

Coming to power, the army frees the thousands of political prisoners who were imprisoned in Camp Boiro, establishes a multiparty system and liberalizes the economy by abolishing the economy police.

On May 23, 1984, the country changed its name to the “Republic of Guinea” instead of “the People’s Revolutionary Republic of Guinea”.
