The Melbourne Cup is once again here, and the race that stops the nation sparks some staggering betting activity.
Last year’s huge boilover victory by Knights Choice saw the bookmakers walk away as the big winners.
But punters this year are hopeful of securing some big wins, none bigger than the $4 million that could be pocketed after some huge bets were made at the annual Call of the Card.
Easygo, a technology company co-founded by Stake founder and Melbourne billionaire Ed Craven, bet $500,000 at $8 on Al Riffa to win $4 million.
“My head was spinning, I tell ya,” bookmaker Chris Lester told Racing.com.
“It is a big bloody bet.
“The amount of money… I have never seen it.
“I have never seen Call Of The Card this big, not in my memory.”

Elsewhere, Sportsbet have also had a $30,000 bet placed on Al Riffa.
The Irish raider is one of the race’s most well-credentialed overseas runners, having won the Irish St Leger in September in dominant fashion.
According to Sportsbet, if their current betting trends continue, the No.1 could even start the race as the favourite, shortening past Half Yours.

Decoding the Form: A Deep Dive
Form is paramount. don’t just look at the last race; consider a horse’s entire recent history. Here’s what to examine:
* Recent Runs: How has the horse performed in its last 3-5 races? Look for consistency, even in defeat.
* Distance Preference: Does the horse excel at the distance of the current race? Some horses are sprinters, others stayers.
* Surface Preference: Al Riffa primarily features turf racing.A horse with a strong record on turf is a significant advantage.
* Weight Carried: In handicap races, weight allocation is crucial. A horse carrying a lighter weight has a clear benefit. handicap ratings are vital here.
* Trainer & Jockey combination: Certain trainer-jockey pairings consistently deliver strong results.Research their win percentages together.

Bookmaker Strategies & Value Betting
Different bookmakers offer varying odds and promotions. Here’s how to maximize your returns:
* Compare Odds: Use odds comparison websites to identify the best price for your chosen horse.
* Consider Each-Way Bets: Especially for horses with longer odds, an each-way bet offers insurance.
* Look for Promotions: Many bookmakers offer best odds guaranteed, extra places each-way, or money-back specials.
* Value Betting: Don’t just bet on the favorite. Identify horses where the odds offered by the bookmaker are higher than your assessed probability of winning. Value bets are the cornerstone of profitable betting.
Advanced Techniques: Pace Analysis & Sectional Timing
Going beyond basic form analysis can provide a significant edge.
* Pace Analysis: Assess how the race is highly likely to unfold. Is it a fast-paced race, or a slowly run affair? A horse that prefers to race prominently may struggle in a fast race, while a closer may thrive.
* Sectional Timing: Sectional times (the time taken to run each furlong) reveal how a horse is running during a race. This can highlight a horse that finished strongly but was held up early, or one that faded after setting a fast pace. Sectional analysis is a more advanced technique.
Real-World Example: The 2024 al Riffa Cup
