Topeka Reports 15th Homicide in 2023: A Southeast Topeka Incident Highlights Rising City Violence

One person died and another was wounded in a double shooting early the afternoon of Aug. 14 at an apartment complex in southeast Topeka, police said.

The names and ages of the victims weren’t immediately being made public.

No arrests had been made.

The person was Topeka’s 15th homicide victim this year.

The capital city had recorded 13 homicide victims by this time in 2024, en route to finishing the year with 22.

Topeka police investigated Aug. 14 at the scene of a homicide in the 2400 block of SE Bellview Avenue.

Police commander: One of the victims reported the shooting

Topeka police about 12:15 p.m. Aug. 14 received a call from one of the victims, who reported the shooting, said Jerry Monasmith, investigations commander for Topeka police.

Police responded to the scene in the 2400 block of SE Bellview Avenue, east of Highland Park High School, 2424 SE California Avenue. Bellview runs north and south is located six blocks east of SE California.

One victim was found deceased at the scene, Monasmith said. The other was taken to a Topeka hospital, he said.

Information wasn’t being made public on the seriousness of the second victim’s wounds.

Detectives and the police department’s violent crime unit were at the scene and canvassing the neighborhood, Monasmith said.

The double shooting appeared to have happened in one of the apartments, he said.
