Toronto Rooftop Fire: Propane Cylinders Exploding, Debris Falling

Emergency services responded to a two-alarm fire at a commercial building under construction in downtown Toronto Friday evening, with police warning of potential explosions and falling debris.

Toronto Police Operations Centre first reported the incident on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after 6:00 PM EST, stating, “Information received that items are possibly exploding and debris may be falling onto the street below. Use caution travelling in the area.” The fire originated on the rooftop of the building located near the intersection of Richmond Street West and John Street, prompting immediate road closures and pedestrian restrictions.

Toronto Fire Services (TFS) confirmed the fire involved ruptured propane cylinders, generating heavy flames and substantial smoke. Crews worked to secure the remaining cylinders on the roof and successfully extinguished the blaze. According to TFS, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Local media outlets captured footage of thick plumes of smoke billowing from the rooftop, visible across the downtown core. The building under construction is reportedly a commercial development, though details regarding the project’s scope and timeline remain limited.

The affected stretch of Richmond Street West was closed between Spadina Avenue and Portland Street, causing significant traffic disruption during the evening commute. Toronto Police advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area while emergency personnel continued operations. The closures were partially lifted as of 9:30 PM EST, according to police updates on X, but Richmond Street West remained closed between John Street and Spadina Avenue.

Fire officials have not yet determined the cause of the initial fire or the circumstances leading to the rupture of the propane cylinders. An investigation is underway to assess the extent of the damage and identify any potential safety concerns related to the ongoing construction project. The Ontario Ministry of Labour has been notified and will be conducting its own investigation into the incident.

As of Saturday morning, Richmond Street West between John Street and Spadina Avenue remains closed as crews continue to assess the structural integrity of the building and clear debris from the roadway. The Toronto Police Service has not provided an estimated time for the full reopening of the street.
