Torrent Snap Losing Streak, Beat Fleet 3-2 | PWHL Highlights

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

SEATTLE – A late surge propelled the Seattle Torrent to a 3-2 victory over the Boston Fleet on Wednesday night, ending a four-game losing streak for the home team. Mikyla Grant-Mentis and Danielle Serdachny each found the back of the net in the final six minutes of regulation, securing the win for Seattle and providing a much-needed boost as they navigate the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season.

The Torrent (5-1-2-9), previously last in the PWHL standings with 16 points, demonstrated resilience after falling behind twice in the contest. Boston, despite the loss, remains at the top of the league with 37 points (9-4-2-3), but saw their six-game winning streak come to an end. The game highlighted the competitive balance within the PWHL, showcasing the ability of teams to challenge even the league leaders.

Grant-Mentis’s crucial goal came on a short-handed opportunity with 5:13 remaining, tying the game at 2-2. Just over three minutes later, Serdachny completed the comeback, capitalizing on a pass from Natalie Snodgrass to give Seattle the lead. Alex Carpenter similarly scored for the Torrent, while Theresa Schafzahl and Susanna Tapani tallied for the Fleet.

Abbey Levy, making her second start of the season for Boston, faced a barrage of shots, stopping 35 of 38. She previously recorded 27 saves in a 3-1 victory over Seattle on December 21st. Corinne Schroeder, the Torrent’s netminder, finished with 25 saves in the win.

The first period saw a quick exchange of goals. Alina Müller set up Daniela Pejsova for a one-timer that Schafzahl redirected past Schroeder, giving Boston a 1-0 lead with just over seven minutes elapsed. However, Seattle responded swiftly, with Carpenter scoring with only 5.6 seconds left in the period, flicking a backhand shot into the net after a save by Schroeder.

Boston regained the lead midway through the second period. Schroeder initially stopped a shot from Loren Gabel, but Tapani was on hand to slam home the rebound, making it 2-1. Despite outshooting Boston 18-7 in the second period, the Torrent couldn’t find the equalizer until the third-period surge.

The Torrent’s victory provides a significant morale boost as they prepare to face the Minnesota PWHL team on Friday. Boston, meanwhile, will seem to rebound when they visit second-place Montreal (35 points) on Sunday. Game statistics are available on the PWHL website.

This win for Seattle underscores the growing competitiveness of the PWHL, where any team can challenge for a victory on any given night. The Torrent’s ability to overcome a two-goal deficit and snap their losing streak demonstrates their potential as the season progresses.

What comes next for both teams will be crucial as they continue to battle for positioning in the PWHL standings. Seattle will aim to build on this momentum, while Boston will seek to regain their winning form.
