Two supporters died and fourteen others were injured in clashes in Medellín following the classic Colombian football championship between Independiente and Atlético Nacional, local police said on Sunday.

The tragedy occurred as the Colombian authorities intend to toughen the sentences for the perpetrators of violence in the stadiums.

“Unfortunately two citizens lost their lives, attacked with knives and blunt objects,” police colonel Henry Bello said in a video.

According to the same source, the two men who died were aged 25 and 34 and were supporters of Independiente, who lost the game 3-1.

The clashes took place near the Atanasio-Girardot stadium in Medellín, the very place where a few weeks ago other clashes had pitted Atlético Nacional supporters once morest the police.

“We will give 200 million (pesos, approximately $58,175) in rewards to those who will help us identify and prosecute those responsible,” said the mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero.
