At least 9 people died last night in the Cuscatlán stadium in El Salvador by a stampede of fans during the match between Alianza and FAS, for the local soccer tournament, reported the National Civil Police (PNC).
The security force added that an undetermined number of injured were referred to hospitals in the city of San Salvador, two of them in critical condition.
The events led to the suspension of the match due to the need for the relief forces to enter the Cuscatlán stadium.
The local newspaper La Prensa Gráfica reported that “the events occurred because the doors of the general sector were closed and the overcrowding of fans led to a stampede and the fainting of several fans.”
