The cyclist, mowed down by a motorist who should have given her priority, was taken to hospital on Tuesday evening where she succumbed to her injuries the next day, the West Flanders prosecutor’s office, Furnes division, reported on Thursday.
The accident took place around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the crossroads of Koningstraat and Langeleedstraat in Wulpen, a village in the municipality of Koksijde. A young woman was riding her bicycle on Koningstraat and was hit by a vehicle at the T-junction with Langeleedstraat. Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene to administer first aid. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition. She died of her injuries there on Wednesday.
The prosecution sent a traffic expert to the scene to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident. According to his first conclusions, the car should have given way to the cyclist.
The driving license of the motorist, aged regarding forty, was immediately withdrawn for a period of 15 days. Toxicological analyzes must now demonstrate whether the forty-something was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
