Sharjah 24 – AFP:

More than 70 people were killed in the collapse of a gold mine at an exploration site for the yellow metal in western Mali, according to an official in a group of local prospectors and a local MP.

Omar Sidibe, one of the official gold prospectors in Kangaba, explained that it started with a noise, and the ground began to shake, and there were more than 200 gold prospectors at the site, and the search work has now ended and we found 73 bodies.

An elected local official confirmed the number of victims, while the Ministry of Mines stated in a statement that a number of miners were killed, without giving accurate numbers, at a time when the government offered its deep condolences to the bereaved families and the Malian people.

The government called on communities living near mining sites and gold miners to strictly respect safety requirements and work only in areas designated for gold extraction.

Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world, and it is one of the leading gold producing countries in Africa.

Gold mining sites regularly suffer fatal collapses, as the activity is dangerous and the authorities seek to control the artisanal exploitation of the metal.

With a production of 72.2 tons in 2022 “including 6 tons through artisanal gold mining,” gold alone contributed 25% of the national budget, 75% of export earnings, and 10% of GDP, announced then Mines Minister Lamine Sidhu. Traoré in March 2023.
