The accident, which occurred around 1:40 AM local time, involved a single vehicle carrying a family and another car driven by a Portuguese man identified as Ruben Goncalves, from Almodovar.

According to well-placed police sources, the four deceased British citizens were members of the same family. The victims included 20-year-old twins who were born in the UK, but whose parents originally hailed from the Portuguese municipality of Mourao and were returning for a holiday.
