Tragic Incident at Van Beneden Quay: Person Falls into Meuse River and Dies, Body Not Yet Recovered

Monday morning, January 1, around 5:54 a.m., the Liège firefighters were called to the Van Beneden quay following a person fell into the Meuse, near the aquarium. The firefighters said: “the person sank, the conditions were difficult, the flow (of the water) was high”. Still according to firefighters, the person died.

Around 12:30 p.m., the body had not yet been recovered.

According to initial information from the police, two people were returning from a party when one of them threw themselves into the water. “It appears to be a voluntary act,” said the Liège police. The accompanying person will be interviewed shortly.
