“The three people who were under the tree were taken to hospital,” said mayor Marnic De Meulemeester (Open VLD). “One of the victims has unfortunately died in the meantime.” The other two victims were also seriously injured.
No information on the identity of the woman has yet been released. No official announcement has yet been made regarding the other victims.
A security perimeter was set up and firefighters examined the area. An investigation is underway.
The prosecution also went to the site and appointed experts to make the necessary findings.
Reports of previous problems with the tree and a possible stability problem will be examined, but “are part of the investigation”, the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office was told Thursday evening.
The tree was placed by the city services of Oudenaarde. Events Alderman John Adam (Open Vld) had already decided that the Christmas market and winter village attractions would remain closed on Thursday. “We will see what happens in the coming days, but it is clear that everyone is very affected by the incident,” he said.
